Fishbowl Effect><{{{*>

Fishbowl Conclusion ><{{{*>

In preparation of the game I began thinking how I was going to design the fishbowl from the fish's point of view, the glass of a fishbowl is round and distorts the image being seen by the fish, to create this view I had to import flash camera methods onto the stage and insert a curve around the centre of the stage, this effect was made so that the person who was trapped in the fishbowl would have the centre of the stage as the normal view that they would usually see and the outside would curve out the same way that a fishbowl would curve out, when I ran the effect for the first time it felt as close to a fishbowl I could imagine as I had to keep returning to the centre view to understand what image was being reflected and to see my face properly in the environment, this made me think do fish swim around the centre of a fishbowl to see a normal view or does it differ for them. unfortunately I cannot ask a fish this question but it was a interesting result and I liked the way it made me question their existance by seeing myself put into their environment, this to me made it a augmented reality as there is no way I could of felt this way before now without physically being in a fishbowl.

To create a better augment effect I decided to add a base to the fishbowl with some sea weed at the bottom of the screen to give more of a water effect on the stage and give off more of a fishlike feel, the way the seaweed moves and the colour of the base represents the base of a fishbowl very closely and does remind you that you are not a human in this environment, but a fish. The other fish inside the bowl was added to bring the fishbowl theory of overcrowding into the user's mind, as the theory say's that the more fish that are in the fishbowl the more it can affect the outcome of how the fish feel, the more fish there are in the environment the more insignificant the fish can feel and being to questions their own existance.

The theories was interesting to read about the fishbowl's and when I was looking at the final project it made me think how usually being on cam could feel a bit paranoid however with the effect it became more of an activity than a mere viewing of myself on the screen, this worked well with the theory that if we could always be seen we would get used to it because I could feel myself having fun being on webcam and generally we do not get this feeling from a mirror or a webcam. I was constantly reminded that I was in a fishbowl with this augment although the reflection was of the real world it looked and felt very different that the real world was being reflected and felt like another world altogether.

However after using the program for a duration of time, with the distortion and the fish effect's I did start to feel disorientated as do some fish in fishbowl's as writer's have written in previous blog's, I thought this was great and this was the overall object of the augmented reality for me to prove to people, therefore I think that the augmented reality was a success and after having a lot of fun with it and learning how it feels to be in a fishbowl it is unlikely that if I owned fish I would like them to be inside one of these containers and I would look more into what would make the fish more comfortable as after being in their environment, I know that it is not a environment I would like to spend my life in after living a life of a human.

I hope that any users of my program recieve the same outcome and realise that their is more to fishbowl's than what you see.

Fishbowl Mentality ><{{{*>

Fishbowl Mentality is the effects of being inhabited in a fishbowl.

We are human's and do not know what it is like to be captivated in one of these bowls, this is why I have made a augmented reality so that we can experience this for ourselves and have a better understanding of what its like for fish inside these objects.

Being inside a fishbowl is not like any other environment, it can become overcrowded very fast and it can start to become uncormfortable.

A fishbowl conversation for example is not so much to do with actual fishbowl's themselves but is a method used so that many people can talk about the same topic together in a circular room or position, this way all of the people are focused on one thing as well as one topic or conversation. It is a good idea to be used in large groups and this large group itself can be split into other groups such as men/women, young/old depending on the topic being discussed, sometimes we see this on television chat show programs where audience participation is involved. For more reading on fishbowl conversations here is a wikipedia link with more information: Fishbowl (Conversation).

Another blogger using blogger.com has discussed how they have changed the walls in their building to glass walls and how it affects behaviour of people due to the fact that these people could not bee seen before and now whomever walks past the glass doors will be able to see the people at work. The blogger discusses how people are very selfconcious at first of being seen/looked at all the time by other people, however after a while they overcome this paranoia/fear and ignore the matter completely, I don't know if there is a scientific explanation for this and neither does the blogger but in this case the blogger has called it the "fishbowl effect", simply meaning that our constraints and thoughts change whilst inside this environment, the blog can be found at Wiggin's free advice column.

I'm sure many people have heard the phrase; "There are plenty of fish in the sea", well this can also be tied in with the fishbowl mentality as it is a sexually orientated idea, by this I mean women need men for example, like fish need water. However the water may be clear but it is always there, women also have a constant reminder of their environment from strip club advertisements and so on, can the fishbowl effect affect your sexual orientation? Fishbowl effect could have also saved a company $50-million starting back in 1975, John L Colley (University of Virginia, USA) has published a paper about the problems incurred by a power plant in America which had major issues due to the fishbowl effect, however, the paper is private but the first two pages can be read which gives a brief introduction to the problems the company had, it is interesting to see how fishbowl's can take a part in business enterprises and cause debt or problems for companies. A project manager must think of everything that might impede a project. For more information visit: SSRN.

The fishbowl effect has been described in poetry by one person in which they have write a poem and in my opinion the representation of the poem is read in the view of a fishbowl (where the sides spin outwards and the centre is focused). The poem is about the fishbowl effect in the sense that nothing is hidden and privacy is at a minimal, the poem can be read at DeviantArt.

American president Obama talks about raising his children on a website, discussing how being president has affects on his children as they are in the view of the public and in his answer he relates to the frog in a saucepan by saying that the gradual rise in publicity/heat the change has not been noticed, to read Obama's answers take a look at the Mother Talkers website.

The fishbowl effect is more popular than I had imagined, its impact can have a lot of effects on the social behaviour and metal capabilities of people/animals alike. Following research in the area somebody has written five points on how to mitigate the effects and has very interesting solutions to the problem, the writing can be found at CharlesandHudson.

A prescription glasses wearer also describes how some glasses lenses have a fishbowl effect in which the view is distorted and things appear bigger or further away on lens101.
